178,725. Swan, Hunter, & W. Richardson, Ltd., Rowntree, F., and Belyavin, P. April 26, 1921. Cylinders, construction of and cooling.-The cylinders of two-stroke-cycle engines are constructed in two parts; the upper portion A being rigidly attached to the standards E, and carrying the lower portion B in which are formed the ports. In multicylinder engines one casting A may be common to several cylinders. The cylinder liner C is attached to the cylinder head D by the bolts f and ring F, a cylinder head liner G being either cast in one with the liner C, or clamped at g<3> by the bolts f. The liner C, which is ribbed or thickened at C, is free to expand axially in the bottom portion B, suitable packings being provided as indicated; in an alternative construction the packings are so disposed that they may be packed in position during erection. The liner G is free to expand axially at g<2>, and radially at g<3>. A cylinder cover D<1> carries the valves. Intercommunicating waterjackets g, a<1>, c<2>, and b<1> are provided, and a distance-piece d<7> may surround the head D.
