Abstract
668,792. Venting containers. ARMSTRONG CORK CO. March 9, 1950. [March 26, 1949] No. 5947/50. Class 125(iii). Gas which may develop pressure within a stored container is vented past the screw threads of a closure cap 2 while the container remains sealed against leakage of liquid by means of a packing 3, comprising a thin facing layer 13, an intermediate layer 8 corrugated to provide channels 11, 12, and a backing layer 7. The upstanding ribs of the channels are rendered less rigid either by placing the liner in a flat press or between press rolls. Figs. 3, 4 show liners treated respectively in these two ways. Excessive gas pressure forces the facing layer up into the channels 12, even around the periphery of the liner when the cap 2 is tightly screwed on to the container, the gas escaping by way of channels 12 to the screw threads 6, 24. The backing layer 7, which may be omitted in cheaper constructions, may be made of pulp board, or paper, as may the intermediate layer 13 which may in addition be made from resilient plastics or vulcanized or synthetic rubber. The latter may also be used in making the facing layer 13 as may vinyl resin when it is applied to a sulphate paper carrier. The liner may be stuck to the closure cap which may be moulded or made of metal.
