An electric cable for carrying high voltages of the kind having a dielectric wholly or mainly of paper or other fibrous material impregnated with a mineral oil or a compound in which mineral oil predominates and in which the dielectric is subjected to a superatmospheric pressure by the application of a compressed gas is characterized in that the mineral oil or compound contains, in addition to the ordinary constituents, a small proportion of an organosilicon polymer which is miscible with it. The proportion of the polymer may lie between 0.001 and 1 per cent by weight of the oil or compound and is added during the preparation of the impregnant. The organo silicon polymer may be polydimethylsiloxane.
