In an oil-filled cable installation in which the cable insulation is impregnated in the usual manner with a natural oil, the compensating vessels, and preferably also the terminals and oil ducts within the cable, are filled with a non- inflammable liquid such as a synthetic oil with a chlorinated hydrocarbon base (e.g. chlorodiphenyl). The dielectric constant of the non-inflammable oil is preferably as near as possible to that of the impregnating oil, and halogenated oils of symmetrical structure such as trichlorobenzene, hexachlorobenzene, hexabromobenzene or perbromonaphthalene are suitable. The compensating vessels may be arranged at a lower level than the cable so that the connecting pipes from the cable open into the tops of the vessels. Any natural oil in the ducts is preferably replaced with the non-inflammable liquid while the cable is heated.
