Abstract

Cable insulation comprises at least one layer of cross-linked polyethylene impregnated with cable oil. Cross-linking may be performed chemically by admixture with 3% of a peroxide such as di-x-cumyl peroxide and subsequent heat treatment, or by irradiation. Impregnation may be effected before or after the polyethylene is applied to the cable, application being either by extrusion or lapping. Suitable oils are conventional hydrocarbon, high purity, non-acidic and non-polar cable oils, preferably prepared from a naphthenic base and having a viscosity within the range 95-105 Saybolt at 100 DEG C. The insulation is preferably built up in layers of impregnated polyethylene tapes alternating with impregnated Kraft paper tapes, the latter acting as a wick or reservoir for changes in oil content of the polyethylene due to temperature variations. Some or all of the Kraft layers may be replaced by varnished cambric or by polyethylene terephthalate, polycarbonates, polymericamides or like materials. The cable may be adapted to oil or gas-filled pressure systems, nitrogen being a suitable gas. Test data are disclosed.
