Abstract

667,205. Toothed gearing; belt gearing. MILLSPAUGH, Ltd., and HEYS, R. C. June 16, 1950 [June 27, 1949], No. 16926/49. Class 80 (i). A gear unit incorporating a variable speed belt drive is driven by a line shaft 1 and has an output shaft 27 whose height is adjustable so that several such units may be used in a machine for various components requiring to be driven at different speeds. A bevel gear 5 on the line shaft 1 meshes with a gear 6 whose shaft 7 is carried by a. bearing 8 and an outer pedestal bearing 9 having a .removable packing piece 10. The shaft 7 carries a multiple expanding pulley 15 driving an expanding or plain V pulley 16 on a shaft 13 which is geared to the output shaft 27 by helical gears 29, 28. The shaft 27 is carried by two levers 24 pivoted about the bearing housings 25 of shaft 13 and provided with extensions 30 having a plurality of holes for bolts 33 securing the levers in any adjusted position. The expanding pulley 15 is adjusted by an internal sleeve 17 and worm wheel 18, and the belts 20 are provided with a guard 21 and pivoted jockey pulley 22. A similar gear unit is described in which the line shaft drives through bevel gearing and expanding pulley gearing a separate spur reduction gear box mounted on an interchangeable pedestal so that the height of the output shaft may be varied.
