Abstract

666,175. Thermionic valves. M-O VALVE CO., Ltd., and LE ROSSIGNOL, R. May 8, 1950 [May 6, 1949], No. 12177/49. Class 39 (i). A directly-heated cathode for a thermionic valve comprises a squirrelcage structure of which the longitudinal members are regularly crinkled wires adapted to act as electron emitters and intended to operate normally at least 1500‹ C. the wires being interconnected at their ends to form a network in which equal currents will pass through all the wires when a voltage is applied across the network. Fig. 1 shows a cross-section of a cathode with six wires, of which four, 1, 2, 3 and 6, are shown. The wires are preferably shaped so that they lie on the curved surface of an imaginary circular cylinder. At one end all the wires are connected to an annular molybdenum member 7 and at the other end alternate wires are connected respectively to discs 8 and 9 to which leads 13 and 14 are connected. The cathode may have a length of 50 mm. and a diameter of 25 mm. To ensure adequate LW rigidity, if the wires are of tungsten -- should R be less than 200 where L is the total length of one emitting wire, R is its radius of cross-section, and W is the distance between lines joining alternate bends in the wire, all lengths being in centimetres. If the wires are of thoriated LW tungsten --- may be considerably greater than R 200.
