Abstract

664,820. Stuffing-box substitutes. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Feb. 9, 1949 [Jan. 23, 1948], No. 2084/48. Class 122(v) In a combined contact and centrifugal pressure fluid seal in which fluid under the influence of centrifugal force builds up in an annular chamber to form a seal and bears upon one of two co-acting contact seal elements or upon a member carrying said element, to tend to separate the elements, one of the elements is carried by or integral with a part of the wall of the annular chamber which is flexible and does not rotate. An impeller carrying blades 3 and having a hub 7 forming one contact seal element, rotates in an inwardly open channel formed by a recess 4 and a,double diaphragm wall, A rubber apertured diaphragm 5, the inner periphery.of which forms the other contact seal element, backed by a spring disc 6 comprises the double diaphragm wall. Under static or low speed conditions. shown in the upper part of the Figure, the spring 6 presses the diaphragm 5 into sealing contact with the hub 7 Upon rotation of the impeller, as shown in the lower part of the Figure, fluid in the recess 4 is flung outwardly to form a fluid seal and also to act on the diaphragm 5 to force it out of contact with the hub 7. In a modification, the diaphragm wall is in one piece and carries at its inner periphery a contact element which has an annular lip provided to trap sealing liquid flowing radially inwardly. A bellows forms the outer wall of the chamber in another embodiment and carries a plate having a contact element, to be spring pressed into sealing contact with an impeller. The chamber in a further embodiment is internally of "U" section and comprises two annular' channel portions both open radially inwardly and with one extending within the other. The outer portion which is rotary, carries one contact element and the inner, one wall of which is a diaphragm carrying the other contact element, is non-rotary. Passages may be provided to supply liquid to the impellers.
