663,146. Casings ; cylinders ; valve gear. SOC. D'ETUDES DE MACHINES THERMIQUES. Oct. 10. 1949 [Oct. 12, 1948], No. 25972/49. Classes 7(ii) and 7(vi) In a cylinder head casing for internalcombustion engines adapted to cover the mechanism operating the engine valves, the casing comprising a substantially cylindrical hollow element 14, Fig. 2, which is separable from, and of smaller diameter than the cylinder head 1 and adapted to be secured to the latter so as to leave outside the element 14 a substantially annular portion of the cylinder head 1 by which the latter is secured to the cylinder, the element'14 is provided with a lateral hollow extension 21 and means, such as bosses 11 and 12 in the element for supporting the valve-operating mechanism. The cylinder head 1, Fig. 1, is secured to the cylinder block by studs 2 whilst rockers 7 and 8 actuate the intake valves 3 and 4 and rockers 9 and 10; in the form of a pronged lever, actuate the exhaust valves 5. and 6. The cast, or pressed casing 14 is secured over the head 1 by means of lugs 15 and screws 16 and the periphery of the casing 14 is arranged inwardly with respect to the studs 2 which thus remain accessible after the casing is in position. The casing 14 which is, sealed to. the head 1 by a plastic or like gasket 18, Fig. 2, is formed with bosses 19 and 20, Fig. 1, that provide bearings, for the intake and exhaust valve rocker shafts 11 and 12 respectively. The outer arms of the rockers are housed in the lateral extension 21 of the casing into which extensions enter the tappets 13.'The casing 14 has a cover 22 secured thereto by a stud 23, the latter connecting the cover with a yoke member, the arms of which provide additional bearings for the rocker shaft 12.
