Class 58 In a hop-picking machine of the kind having a plurality of pairs of rollers between each pair of which the laterals or the like stalks of hop bines are fed in succession, each roller pair after the first being driven in the feeding direction at a speed which is greater than that of the preceding pair, one roller of a pair is anchored at one end only and the other roller of the pair is anchored at the opposite end, the other ends of the rollers of the pair being mounted for movement towards and away from the anchored ends of the other rollers of the pair. As shcwn, the first pair of rollers is mounted on shafts 9, 8, the near end of shaft 9 being fixedly journalled and the near end of the shaft 8 journalled in a block 12 pressed by a spring 13 towards the other roller. The near ends of the shafts 15, 16, 9a, 8a of the other pairs of rollers are likewise alternately fixedly and resiliently mounted. The far end of each shaft is mounted in the opposite manner to its near end. A chain 18 drives the shaft 9 via a sprocket 19 therein which via a gear 20 thereon drives a pinion 21 fast on the shaft 15. Fast with the near end of the latter is a gear 22 driving a pinion 23 fast on the shaft 9a. Each of the gear pairs 20, 21 and 22, 23 gives a 2:1 speed increase. Corresponding gear pairs are arranged at the far side of the system.
