Abstract

Variable-speed gearing comprises a cam 14 mounted loosely upon an eccentric 13 upon a driving-shaft 6 and connected to an aligned shaft 3, which is driven at reduced speed in the same or in reversed direction. The cam 14 comprises a symmetrical plurality of lobes 15, 16, 17, shaped as circular arcs adapted to coact with rollers 9 - - 12, which are one more in number than the lobes. The rollers 9 - - 12 may be mounted upon a member which is allowed to slip, the shaft 3 being driven at variable speed. The device may alternatively be adapted to yield different speeds by having two or more cams coacting with two or more sets of rollers in revoluble frames which are held against rotation alternatively. The transmission from the eccentricallymoving cam 14 to the shaft 3 may be by an Old. ham coupling, or may take the form of another cam and roller system, the cam differing as to the number of its lobes 18, 19, and the rollers 22, 24 being carried by a frame secured to the shaft 3.
