[Also in Group XVI] A rotary drive for intermittent driven rotation comprises a driving pinion 26 with a complete set of teeth which engages simultaneously with two coupled pinions 27, 28, the pinion 27 being keyed to, and the pinion 28 being loosely mounted on, the driven shaft 1, these coupled pinions each having a non-toothed sector 27a, 28a, respectively, of sufficient size to prevent driving by the pinion 26, and being connected together by a pin 30 and slot 35, or other lost-motion coupling, permitting each of the pinions to make a limited angular movement with respect to the other. The two non- toothed sectors 27a, 28a are always staggered angularly in all the possible positions of the lostmotion coupling. Discs 31, 32 (Fig. 3, not shown) fixed on each side of the pinion 26 are of slightly larger diameter than the latter, and have notches 31a, 31b and 32a, 32b, respectively, therein which co-operate with lugs on U-shaped pieces 33, 34 fixed, respectively, on the non-toothed sector portions of the pinions 27, 28. In operation, when the pinion 26 is driven by a crank M, the lugs on the pieces 33, 34 co-operate with the discs 31, 32 to retain one or the other of the respective pinions 27, 28 stationary when the non-toothed sectors are opposite the pinion 26, and starting impulses are imparted to the pinions 27, 28 by the pin and slot means 30, 35 when the lugs of the pieces 33, 34 are able to mate in the respective notches 31a . . . 32b in the discs. Thus the continuous rotation of the pinion 26 by the crank M results in stationary periods of the driven shaft 1, and the pinions 27, 28 are not stationary at the same instant. The invention is described as applied to a duplicating machine (see Group XVI).
