662,063. Excavating earth. OAKLEY, J. L. D. (Harnischfeger Corporation). Feb. 16, 1949. No. 4257/49. Class 68 (i). [Also in Group I] An earth cutting tooth comprises a frustoconical shank 5 and a shovel portion 7 which slopes downwards from the axis 19 of the shank and is formed in the vicinity of the shank as a nose portion 6 of triangular configuration for deflecting earth away from the shankreceiving socket 3 in the arm 2 of the machine 1. A strengthening web 8 extends from the shovel portion 7 to the rear end of the shank. In the leading portion of the shovel is formed a trough 10 having embedded therein, by a matrix 14, hard wear-resisting inserts 13 which are protected from impact by the lip 12 of the shovel portion. The inserts 13 may be replaced by small fragmentary pieces of hard material mixed in the matrix.
