Abstract

544,984. Excavators. PRIESTMAN BROS., Ltd., and BROCKLEBANK, N. Dec. 11, 1940, Nos. 17558/40 and 21042/41. [Class 68 (i)] In an excavator comprising a crane having an arm 14 pivoted to the end of the jib 18 to swing in a vertical plane lengthwise of the jib and carrying a scoop 10 at its lower end, the scoop is pivoted to the arm 14 and its angular position relative to the arm is controlled by a link 26 connecting the scoop to a point 30 on the jib displaced from the pivotal axis 17 of the arm; the pivotal points 16, 17, 28, 30 may form the comers of a parallelogram or otherwise. An ejector plate 34 may be pivoted to the scoop at 28 so as to sweep along the arcuate bottom 12 of the scoop, being connected by a link 36 to a lug 38 on arm 14 so as to recede into the scoop as the cut proceeds, and eject the spoil in the reverse movement. In Fig. 2 the link 36 is formed as a turnbuckle for adjustment, and the scoop is adjustable relatively to arm 14 by means of arcuate slots 40; a wedge sole plate 44 is provided carrying a taper rib of semi-circular section which forms in groove in the trench to receive pipes, cable &c. Instead of making the scoop adjustable, the sole plate 44 may be pivoted at 48 and adjustably held by a bolt 62, wedges 64 being interposed between the sole plate and scoop; the rib 46 is interchangeably held by screws 56 and bolts 58.
