661,559. Linear-dimension gauges. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (Sandvikens Jernverks Aktiebolag.). Dec. 28, 1949, No. 33130/49. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 8, 1950.] Class 106 (ii). A gauge for measuring the thickness of band material is in the form of a carriage adapted to be carried by the band while rolling thereon and provided with a band-gripping measuring device. A frame 1 has bolted thereto a yoke 12 rotatably supporting a roller 13 which engages the under-side of the band 2 and forms bearings for axles 6 to which are fixed handles 10 and brackets 5 rotatably supporting the axles of wheels 3 which engage the upper side of the band 2. Springs 8 interconnecting lugs 7, 9 on brackets 5 and frame 1 urge the wheels 3 and roller 13 so as to hold the band 2 resiliently therebetween, while pressing the handles 10 toward each other releases the pressure to facilitate engaging or disengaging the band from the gauge. A feeler 14 is slidably mounted in a bore opposite the roller 13 and is resiliently urged into contact with the upper surface of the band by a spring 23 pulling upwardly on the end of a pointer 19 bent at right-angles and supported by a knife edge 20 on the feeler while pivoting about a fixed knife edge 22 so that the pointer moves against a scale 24 to indicate the thickness of the band 2. A handle 17 with ball-and-socket mounting facilitates relative movement between gauge and band. Any known indicating device may replace that shown. The number of wheels may be reduced to two or three.
