Abstract

658,113. Supply systems for discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and WILLIAMS, C. E. Nov. 17, 1948, No. 29923. [Class 38 (iv)] To equalize the wattage consumption of the heaters 6, 7 of a hot-electrode A.C. discharge lamp 5, the heating current is provided by a transformer 16 having secondary windings 18, 19 separately connected to the heaters and arranged on different parts of the core of the transformer, each part being magnetically shunted by another portion of the core different from that on which the primary winding 17 is disposed. As shown, the core parts 21, 22, carrying respectively the two secondary windings, form magnetic shunts for each other. Additional shunts 23, 24 may be arranged between the primary and secondary windings. In another arrangement the primary winding occupies the centre portion of the middle limb of a three-limbed core and the secondary windings are disposed one at each end of the same limb, being separated from the primary winding by magnetic shunts which extend between the middle and outer limbs. The lamp may be supplied at a voltage higher than that of the mains by a winding closely coupled to the primary winding.
