Abstract
657,600. Knitting. SCOTT & WILLIAl\IS, Inc. April 8, 1948, No. 9845. Convention date, April 25, 1947. [Class 74 (ii)] In a circular knitting-machine having independent latch needles, there are provided a series of sinkers, a cast-off cam and a stationary levelling cam for the sinkers, adapted to hold them at the cast-off point to prevent overthrow, in combination with a movable secondary castoff cam following the cast-off point and resilient means to press the secondary cam inwardly. To produce uniform stitches, regardless of machine speed, the sinkers are boxed in, at the regular sinker cast-off point A, by an adjustable pivoted tip 310 on the regular centre sinker cam 312 ; and to enable the stitches to be held down for casting-off during the make-up courses and in the welt and to ensure proper casting-off of tuck stitches, there is provided, shortly after the regular cast-off cam 308, an auxiliary sinker cast-off cam 309 held in by a leaf-spring 329 the pressure of which on the cam varies accordin to the height of a thrust rod 461. When the thrust rod is on the surface of a pattern drum 120, a spring 474, acting through lever 493 and rotatable rod 325 is permitted to increase the pressure between leaf spring 329 and the cam 309 to that necessary for casting off the picot tuck stitches of the welt; when the thrust rod is on a low cam 503 the moderate pressure exerted by the spring 329 is such as is suitable during the make-up courses and (if desired) during knitting of leg and foot; when a medium cam 502 is operative (as it may be in leg formation) the spring 329 is out of contact with the cam 309 being held away from it by a spring 330; when the bar 461 is on a high cam 501, as during heel and tow formation, the latch opening ring is actuated at a time which does not interfere with the insertion of the cam 309.
