Abstract

656,424. Cathode-ray tubes. CINEMATELEVISION, Ltd., and BARTLE, O. Jan. 6, 1949, No. 375. [Class 39 (i)] In the manufacture of a cathode-ray tube, the envelope is made in two parts 1, 2, the neck portion 1 containing a filamentary cathode 5, a modulating electrode 6 and an anode 4 supported by a conical glass flange 3. This electron gun structure is lined up while the glass of the pinch is soft by inserting a jig through the anode 4 from the flange side, the jig being shaped so that its end enters the aperture in the electrode 6 and in addition to aligning the elements of the gun provides a measure of the correct distance between the anode 4 and the electrode 6. To enable the usual conducting coating on the side wall of the tube to be continued so as to cover the area where the parts 1 and 2 are sealed together, an evaporator 8 is heated by induction or eddy current heating. The evaporator may comprise a ring of tungsten wire on which is coiled a length of thinner aluminium wire. In an alternative arrangement the neck portion 1 may include the portion of the bulb where the flare commences and in this case the evaporator may be positioned within the bulb of the tube instead of in the cylindrical neck portion as shown.
