Abstract

455,927. Cathode-ray tubes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Electra House, Victoria Embankment, London.-(Assignees of Zworykin, V. K. ; 4800, Walnut Street, Philadelphia, U.S.A.) April 29, 1935, No. 12806. Convention date, April 28, 1934. [Class 39 (i)] The envelope consisting of a tubular neck 46 and an enlarged bulb 46<1> contains an electron gun in the neck 46 and a pair of deflecting plates 10, 12 supported at least partly from the gun, extending from the neck 46 into the bulb 46<1> and having a maximum separation greater than the diameter of the neck 46. The gun comprises a cathode 30, a control electrode 34 and an anode 36 all supported from a stem 28, an insulating ring 38 and a glass bead 42 being used in the anode mounting. The deflecting plates are formed into a unit comprising also an insulating collar 16, an apertured diaphragm 18 maintained at a positive potential with respect to the anode 36, and a ring electrode 58. Secondary electrons from the fluorescent screen 54 are intercepted by the ring 58 and by the sloping plates 10, 12 and silvering of the envelope is unnecessary. In manufacturing the tube, both ends of the envelope are originally open, the gun is introduced through the end of the neck 46, the stem 28 being sealed at 48 to the neck, and the deflecting unit is introduced through the open end of the bulb 46<1> so that the collar 16 slides over the anode 36, fluorescent end-disc 54 being finally sealed to the envelope. Leads 22a, 24a to the plates 10, 12 support the plates at their ends near the screen and leads 50, 64 are provided for the electrodes 18, 58. In modified methods of manufacture, the fluorescent coating is applied to the disc 54 through an aperture in the envelope after the disc is sealed to the bulb 46<1>, and the gun and deflecting plates are assembled to form a unit outside the envelope and are all introduced through the open end of the bulb 46<1>. Television tubes in which the ray is deflected electrostatically in one direction and electromagnetically in the other direction are referred to.
