Abstract

452,589. Cathode-ray tubes. NICOLL, F. H., 17, The Drive, Ickenham, and ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Blyth Road, Hayes, both in Middlesex. Feb. 25, 1935, No. 6037. Addition to 431,327. [Class 39 (i)] At least one of the decelerators 2, Fig. 1, or a cathode shield electrode, of the tube described in the parent Specification comprises an apertured diaphragm, the surface of which facing the screen is of dished, frusto-conical, hemispherical or parabolic shape to focus the beam on to the aperture in the adjacent diaphragm. The diaphragm may be shaped in such manner that portions thereof around the aperture are normal to the ray and portions farther from the aperture are at progressively decreasing angles to the ray. The tube comprises a cathode 5, shield 4, accelerator 1, decelerator 2, to which the modulating potentials are applied, and anodes 3, 8 in the form of tubular electrodes provided with apertured diaphragms. The anode 8 may consist of a silver coating on the envelope and, with the anode 3, focuses the beam onto the screen. The diaphragm of the decelerator 2 is arranged on the cathode side of the centre line, and the anode 3 is provided with a second diaphragm 10, the aperture in which is larger than that in the first diaphragm 9. Further decelerators, which may have a dished shape, and accelerators may be provided. In another form, the diaphragm may comprise flat plates 11, Fig. 3, which have coaxial apertures of progressively varying diameters. Specification 447,493 is referred to.
