Abstract

653,274. Stuffing box substitutes. JENDRASSIK, G. Dec. 29, 1947, No. 34463. Convention date, Aug. 29, 1944. [Class 122(v)] In a sealing arrangement to form a seal against a high pressure (in space 2), leaking between the working surfaces of relatively movable members comprising one or more sealing elements 4 arranged in a channel in one of the members, 5, and rubbing against the working surface 3 of the other said members and loading means for pressing the elements into sealing contact (spring loaded, or by pressure from space 2 entering via channel 18 and/or passage 7 into space 8), the sealing elements are composed of a substance possessing self-lubricating properties at low temperatures (e.g. carbon), and having associated therewith a substance or substances possessing selflubricating properties at a much higher temperature (e.g. talc, zinc oxide, or comminuted mica), the substances being arranged together so that particles worn off by rubbing are dispersed between the rubbing surfaces to lubricate them. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the substance possessing self-lubricating properties at high temperatures is arranged in the form of rods 6, and in another embodiment is arranged in blocks positioned between adjacent sealing elements 4. Said blocks may be provided with cavities containing the substance from which the elements 4 are composed to even up wear. As shown in Fig. 4, the rubbing surfaces may be provided with a pressure relieving groove 13 whch is connected by bores 12 in the element 4 to the high pressure space 8. The depth of the groove is maintained by a small cutting tool 14 fastened by a screw 15 in the port 3.
