[Class 123 (i)] [Also in Groups XIX and XXVII A joint packing for an instrument casing 10, Fig 3, having an external machine surfaced flange 16 to which is bolted a mating cover flange 11, is characterised by the provision in one flange, say 16, of a groove 17 in which is located packing material of depth exceeding that of the groove, and in the other flange 11 of two matching grooves 13, 14 separated by a rib 15, which though not projecting beyond the flange surface, compresses the packing when the two flanges 11, 16 make mating contact. As shown in Fig. 4, the volume of the packing material projecting from the groove 17, when compressed, in less than the combined volume of the matching grooves 13, 14.
