511,107. Stuffing-box substitutes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 5, 1938, No. 28903. Convention date, Oct. 7, 1937. [Class 122 (v)] A stuffing-box substitute for compressors, particularly for refrigerating-machines, comprises a sealed housing 23 forming a chamber 17 separated from the interior of the main casing and surrounding the shaft 1 having fixed thereto a packing ring 14 against which bears a slidable ring 16 subjected to the force of a spring 18 and attached to one end of a bellows-like spring-casing 19 which is sealed in an airtight manner at its outer end, the chamber 17 being connected to the suction lead 6 of the compressor by a pipe 26 whereby the packing-surfaces are relieved from high pressure. The outer end of the casing 19 is soldered to a disc 20 which together with a packing-ring 21 is pressed against the housing 23 by a plate 22. Pressure in the chamber 17 may be maintained slightly above atmospheric pressure by providing a restricted passage or throttle valve in the pipe 26.
