Abstract
648,974. Lamp-holders. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 21, 1947, No. 28136. Convention date, Oct. 23, 1946. [Class 38 (i)] [Also in Group XI] In a lighting unit combining an annular fluorescent lamp 1 and an incandescent lamp 2, the holder 3 for the fluorescent lamp comprises a metal hub 5 and three radial arms, one arm 6 being of hollow rigid construction and having a socket 11 engaging the lamp contact pins, the other arms comprising resilient metal jaws 9, 10 engaging the periphery of the lamp. The lamp contact pins are disposed at 45 degrees to the plane of the lamp so that the jaws 9, 10 act to keep the pins in engagement with the socket 11. An adaptor 4 secures the unit to the usual threaded power socket for receiving an incandescent lamp and is attached to the hub 5 by a swivel joint comprising a collar 13 journalled on a block 14 of insulating material secured to the bottom of the hub and having two interior pins 15 for engagement with bayonet slots 16 on the adaptor. The top of the adaptor has a central recess 21 containing a contact clip 20 engaging with a contact pin 22 protruding from the hub and an annular recess 25 containing a contact clip 24 engaging with a ring-shaped contact 26 protruding from the hub. A C-shaped corrugated metal strip 28 secured in the annular recess 25 presses on the ring contact 26 to lock the pin and slot connection between the adaptor and the rotatable collar 13. The adaptor may be connected by a permanent or bayonet type joint to the hub. The incandescent lamp socket comprises a threaded shell 30 insulated from the metal hub by a sleeve 31 and secured by rivets 33, 35 to an insulated disc 32 bolted to the hub. The rivet 33 constitutes the central contact being insulated from the shell by an upper insulated disc 34, and the rivet 35 serves as the connection to the shell.
