376,686. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Buttolph, L. J. ; 1, Columbia Avenue, Grantwood, New Jersey, U.S.A.) March 21, 1932, No. 8372. Convention date, March 21, 1931. [Class 39 (i).] Relates to the attachment of a support to the silica envelope of a mercuryvapour arc or other lamp by the methods described in Specification 364,188. According to the present invention, a split ring is placed in registry with an irregularity in the body, a closely-fitting sleeve is slipped over the ring, and the sleeve is then secured to the ring. The silica envelope 1, Figs. 1, 3, is formed with an annular depression 2 in its wall, a split ring 3 of nickel or the like is placed in the depression, and a sleeve 4 of nickel is then placed over the ring, the sleeve preferably having a slot 5 in its edge which registers with the joint in the ring. A number of holes 6 are formed in the ring, and silver solder is dropped through these holes to unite the sleeve to the ring. The sleeve serves both as a support and as a current collector for an associated electrode. The slot in the sleeve increases its elasticity and prevents it from crushing the envelope .1 by contraction when cooling. In some cases, ordinary solder may be used instead of silver solder, and in other cases the sleeve may be screwed on to the ring or may grip it by friction.
