Abstract
648,351. Mining-machines. HUWOOD MINING MACHINERY, Ltd., and BAINBRIDGE, F. Feb. 12, 1948, No. 4136. [Class 68 (i)] In a double-ended planer for mineral mining, a kerf in advance of, and to receive the leading edge 31 of, the cutting wedge 14 is formed by vertically spaced teeth 28 mounted on the outside of the vertical limbs of an H-shaped frame. The horizontal limb 29 of the H-frame is positioned within the outer compartment 2 of a double-compartment gear box and is mounted on two parallel eccentrics 32 carried on shafts 36 leading into the second compartment where a suitable gearing is provided for a drive from two motors 45 incorporated in that part of the plough structure which bridges the face conveyer on which the plough runs. Modifications envisaged are a single-ended type planer particularly for use in low seams where the cut mineral is carried away by the conveyer from ahead of the bridge structure instead of passing on the conveyer below the bridge structure, cutting sections to be added to the arms of the H-frame to allow for variations in height of the seam and the replacement of the H-frame by vertically disposed pick carrying rods whose ends are mounted on revolving crank-discs.
