Abstract

630,112. Coal mining machines. HOY & CO., Ltd., A., and PROCTOR, S. E. Nov. 24, 1947, No. 31138. [Class 68 (i)] In a long-wall coal mining machine in which the cutter chain 22 can flex in more than one dimension, the chain drive sprocket 17 is mounted on a bracket 36 secured to the machine body, the sprocket being in a plane above that of the jib 18; the chain guides 21 formed in the hanger are inclined upwardly so that a space 24 is provided beneath the chain on the outgoing side from the cut into which the cuttings may fall. Situated in this space is a belt conveyer 25 that is driven by gearing from the underside of the chain sprocket, the conveyor carrying the cuttings clear of the machine. To remove the fillet formed in the cut when the end of the jib is upturned to act as a shear cutter, there is provided a cutter-bar 61 which is mounted on the hanger and extends through the centre of the jib. In addition to the picks 64 at the end of the bar for removing the fillet, additional picks 63 are provided along the bar, their length being such that they project above the upper surface of the jib to engage and break down the undercut coal. The gear-box is provided with two oppositely disposed clutch units so that it may drive the conveyer 25 and a loader conveyer 40 irrespective of whether the jib is arranged for right or left handed operation on the face.
