Abstract
647,468. Power-generating systems ; turbine plant. MASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. Jan. 28, 1947, No. 2683. Convention date, April 18, 1946. [Classes 110(iii) and 122(iii)] Ship's auxiliaries are driven by the gas turbine 3 of a power generating plant which is separate from the main power generating plant and includes a combustion chamber 2 in which oil fuel is burnt with a large excess of air and the exhaust gases from the gas turbine are led to the ship's boilers 5 to aid combustion therein. Any additional air necessary to meet the difference between the quantity of unburnt air in the exhaust gases and the combustion air requirements for the boiler are supplied at 6 and may be pre-heated, whilst any surplus gas is tapped off at 7 and may be used to preheat the boiler feed water or the compressed air for the gas turbine unit. When the boilers are not in use but auxiliary power is required the gas turbine continues to operate as a separate unit and connections are arranged to enable the compressed air between compressor 1 and combustion chamber 2 to be heated by the exhaust gases from the turbine 3 in an existing boiler air preheater. Should the temperature of the turbine exhaust gases be too high for the boiler burners they may be cooled by heat transfer to either the boiler feed water or the compressed air of the gas turbine unit.
