Abstract

804,322. Utilizing exhaust; cooling cylinders. BAIER, O., BAIER, S., BAIER, L., BAIER, W., BAIER, W., and SCHLUMPRECHER, E., [trading as BAIER KOMMGES WEBASTO-WERKE, W.], Jan. 16, 1956 [Jan. 18, 1955; April 22, 1955], No. 1408/56. Class 7(2) [Also in Group X] An electric generator and heating unit comprises a generator 2 driven by an internalcombustion engine 1 which is operated with an over-rich mixture, tc produce exhaust gases containing unburnt fuel which are fed through a burner nozzle 10 tc a burner chamber 3 and ignited by an ignitior coil 11, the combustion products issuing at 12 either serving for direct heating or for indirect heating through a heat exchanger 43. The over. rich mixture may be obtained by adjustment of a carburetter 33 or in jection system 40 and air is supplied to chamber 3 by a fan 15 on the generator drive shaft 13. Additional fuel may be supplied to the nozzle 10 from a tank 28 through a pipe 20 containing a float valve 27, regulating valve 26, and electromagnetically operated valve 25 which shuts off the fuel flow when the generator 2 is stationary. The generator charges a battery 31 and also supplies the coil 11 and a heating coil 17 in the air inlet pipe of chamber 3, a speed responsive switch 32 being provided in the circuit of valve 25 to prevent this valve being held open by the battery when the engine is stationary. Fuel may alternatively be fed to the nozzle 10 by a pump 24 driven by the engine or by an electric motor. In a modification, Fig. 4, the burner chamber 103 is fed with exhaust gases through nozzle 110 and with air passed over the cylinder cooling fins by a fan 115 and is surrounded by an annular chamber 148 in which air supplied thereto by a fan 145 on the drive shaft 144 of the generator 102 is heated, the heated air flowing through outlet 112 to the space to be heated. The generator 102 is driven from the engine through a clutch 130 by which it can be unclutched and used as a motor the engine through a clutch 130 by which it can be unclutched and used as a motor to drive the fan 145 as a vetilation fan.
