Abstract
645,881. Fluid bearings. TODD, K. W., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Sept. 25, 1947, No. 26057. [Class 12 (i)] A device for investigating gas flow vorticity as described in Specification 644,807, [Group XXXVI], has gas bearings comprising a casing 4 and a rotor 1 having hubs 5, 5<SP>1</SP> which form a pressure chamber 2 into which gas is fed through a duct 3. Radial and axial shaft location is effected by gas flow between the casing 4 and hubs 5, 5<SP>1</SP> and end discs 6, 6<SP>1</SP> respectively. Rotation is effected by a vaned impeller 7 the speed of which is measured by a light reflecting or interrupting surface 8. In a modification the casing rotates and the shaft is stationary, gas being introduced through an axial bore therein.
