Abstract

645,693. Power generating systems. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING SUPERHEATER, Inc. Jan. 16, 1947, No. 1463. Convention date, Dec. 16, 1944. [Classes 110(iii) and 122(iii)] [Also in Group XII] A steam power plant comprises a primary expansion turbine 5 compounded with a secondary turbine 15 and a secondary rotary piston engine 17 mechanically coupled to a drive shaft 21, a boiler 1 fired by burners 29a, 29b, 29c, 29d fed from a fuel tank 28 and supplying unthrottled steam to the primary turbine 5, an accumulator 8 at below boiler pressure into which the primary turbine exhausts and which supplies the secondary turbine 15 through a variable distributing valve 10; the latter being geared to a fuel supply cylinder 31 for similarly varying the fuel supply to the boiler, and supplementary automatic means, e.g. a valve 36 controlled by a spring-loaded piston 37 subjected to accumulator pressure for varying the fuel supply in accordance with accumulator pressure. The secondary turbine 15 exhausts to the engine 17 and the accumulator 8 comprises a closed unfired vessel having steam and water spaces to which the latter turbine 5 exhausts. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a system having a primary turbine and a secondary piston engine mechanically geared to a common drive shaft and supplied with steam from a boiler and accumulator and wherein the supply rate of fuel from a tank to a plurality of burners is automatically controlled by a piston valve controlled by a servomotor itself under the influence of a governor as described in Specification 641,887. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
