[Class 140] [Also in Group XIII] A composite sheet or block for use in covering or constructing heat and soundinsulated walls is formed by uniting a paper pulp and wood fibre slab 1, produced according to the method of Specification 595,474, and a strong, rigid panel 2 of a mixture of wood chips, shavings and sawdust, sandwiched between sheets 3 of paper, woven material, wood veneer or asbestos felt which may be binder-impregnated, and treated under heat and pressure with a binder. Moreover the two component layers 1 and 2, 3 are united by an adhesive layer 4 of synthetic resin, casein latex, rubber or bitumen which may incorporate a sheet of metal foil, rubber or polyvinyl chloride and which acts as a vapour barrier against moisture. The binder consists of a synthetic resin, casein or Scotch glue. A waterproof layer 5, e.g. of bitumen, on the face of the slab 1 and the edges of the composite sheets is applied on the site when used to secure the sheets to a wall surface. If this layer 5 is applied during manufacture, a further removable and reusable covering of cellulose acetate or polyvinyl chloride is used to prevent sticking together of stacked sheets, or a permanent paper covering is used when the sheets are not for erection by adhering to a surface. A durable, external surface may be provided by a thin sheet 6 of steel, aluminium or aluminium alloy. Specifications 595,701, 644,564 also are referred to.
