Abstract

1,061,277. Laminates. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. June 22, 1964 [July 2, 1963], No. 25700/64. Heading B5N. A laminate of adhesively secured layers comprises a substantially rigid base layer of bonded mineral fibres, an outer layer of synthetic resin and in between one or more layers of scrimtype fabric. A metallic foil layer may be included. The outer layer of synthetic resin may be embossed and/or pin-holed. The mineral fibres may be of glass or slag, preferably of matted and interbonded glass fibres, the bonding agent being a phenol-aldehyde resin: the fabric may be a scrim textile or other openmesh fabric, preferably of glass fibres, and the synthetic resin a vinyl resin, e.g. a copolymer of vinyl chloride or acetate. The adhesive uniting the layers may be neoprene. Lamination may be effected using heat and pressure. The laminate may be in the form of a board or panel or shaped to form a duct. In an example the base layer of fibrous glass mat is first provided with three parallel chamfered grooves, adhesive is applied to the ungrooved face, then a layer of scrim 42, metal foil 44 and a resin film 46 applied and laminated to the base layer by heat and pressure. The laminate is then folded along the grooves to form a duct of rectangular cross-section, and adhered along its meeting edges at 48. The edge regions of layers 42, 44 and 46 are stuck together and adhered along the top face of the duct. In an alternative method four separate panels, preferably with chamfered contacting edges, replace the grooved base layer. The laminate may be used as an acoustic tile for walls or ceilings or in fabricating duet systems.
