Abstract

606.101. Compound sheet materials. FRASER. R. P. March 2. 1943, No. 3415. [Class 140] Decorative sheet material consists of at least two thin flexible sheets or films and at least one intervening layer of parallel, spaced, spun glass threads, the facing sheet or film being tinted and transparent or translucent and the backing sheet being similar, or opaque. The glass threads may be adhesively united to the surfaces of the film layers, and the film layers then bonded to one another and, if desired, to a backing such as plywood, glass, metal, millboard, or wall board. Thermoplastic films such as cellulose acetate may be united by heat and pressure, regenerated cellulose films require the use of a transparent adhesive or an interposed film of thermoplastic material. Several transparent films, differently tinted, may be superposed, and the glass threads carried by the different films may run parallel or cross. The surface film may be made glossy or matt, either before uniting with the other layers, or by uniting it with them between rough or smooth surfaces, e.g. felt, cloth, or polished steel. Portions of one layer may be punched or cut out to give a pattern, or the spun glass threads may be -coloured. The surface of a laminated building slab so made may be temporarily protected by a removable sheet of paper.
