Abstract

684,086. Compound sheet materials; strengthening edges of sheet material. KING, E. P. July 18, 1948. [July 16, 1948], No. 19196/48. Classes 42 (i) and 140. [Also in Group XXIII] A laminated material comprises two outer layers 12 of fibrous material adhesively secured to a core 11 comprising a sheet or strip of balsa or like light wood cut with its grain extending perpendicularly to the faces of the sheet or strip. Two or more such laminated sheets may be bonded together in superposition. The core may be provided with reinforcements, e.g. strips of material 13 set with their width parallel to the grain of the core, or the core may consist of spaced strips of end-grain, light wood. The outer layers may be of paper, asbestos paper or felt, plywood, linen or cotton fabric, glass tissue or glass fabric, or combinations of these materials. One or both of the outer layers may be impregnated with the adhesive, coated on both sides, or only on the side adjacent the core. The adhesive may be a phenol-aldehyde resin, set by heat and pressure in a press or autoclave. The reinforcements 13 may be strips of hard wood, thin plywood, asbestos, plastic, or metal. Bent or curved sheets may be produced. The core and outer layers may be separately preformed by bending. Alternatively the core may be bonded flat to one outer layer, the resulting sub-assembly being then bent with the core at the inside of the bend, and the other outer layer bonded to the core. A bend so made may connect two flat parts in which the core is of side-grain balsa wood. The material may be strengthened locally e.g. for the reception of bolts, by providing strips of hard plywood or metal beneath the outer layers and lying in recesses in the core, or ribs and stringers may be stuck, rivetted or screwed to the outer layers before securing to the core. The edges may be reinforced by routing out the core to a suitable depth and filling the recesses so formed with a sealing compound, plastic wood, or preformed strips of plastic material, hard rubber, or wood, which may be mitred at the corners. When the sheet has rounded corners, laminated wood strips may be used, bent where necessary by steaming. Specifications 559,527, [Group XXII], 635,823, and 684,092 are referred to.
