Abstract

684,092. Compound sheet materials; strengthening edges. KING, E. P. March 27, 1950. [March 25, 1949] No. 8162/49. Classes 42 (i) and 140. [Also in Groups X, XVII and XXXIII] A laminated bent material is produced by bonding, with a hot-setting adhesive to one face of a flexible sheet of metal or other material which cannot be satisfactorily bonded by cold setting adhesive, a flexible layer of fibrous material such as fabric, paper or veneer, subsequently bonding to the fibrous layer, by means of a cold-setting adhesive at normal or slightly elevated temperature, a layer or layerlike structure comprising light weight compressible wood (such as balsa or basong wood) with the grain substantially perpendicular to the face of the sheet, bending the bonded assembly with the layer or like structure of wood at the inner side of the band and securing the bent assembly against bending in the reverse direction. A tie of facing sheet may be used for the latter purpose. If the facing sheet is of a material which cannot be satisfactorily coldbonded it is faced with a layer of fibrous material as described above. Two facing sheets each bonded to a fibrous layer, may be used one on each side of the wood core 23, the outer one 21 being unbroken and the inner one 34, 35 being cut at the bend to allow the structure to be bent. A strip 33 is secured over the gap to maintain the shape of the substance. The exposed part of the core may be routed or saw cut to facilitate bending. The core may be composed of spaced strips of wood with the grain normal to the forming sheets and the core is completed by wood, plywood metal thermosetting plastic or asbestos, if necessary hotbonded to a fibrous material that with coldbond to the core wood. The facing layers may be of aluminium, aluminium alloy, stainless steel, asbestos, plastic or glass-cloth. The bent structure may be formed and one forming layer bonded thereto simultaneously. The edges of the core material may be removed and strips 62 of wood, plastic or metal inserted. They are preferably held in position by adhesives, and protect the core from water and mechanical damage. According to the Provisional Specification the core wood may be softened by steaming or wetting.
