Abstract

Rigidly bonded composites of two layers where one material is relatively strong, where the contact face of the weaker material is covered with an intersecting pattern of cuts or slots giving the effect of contact as a series of sub panels capable of slight independent movements to accommodate relative strains between the two materials without producing cracks right through the weaker layer. Pref. the slots are cut to a depth corresponding to the neutral axis of the composite. Pref. the slots intercept at 90 degrees. Esp., for mfr. of building panels e.g., plasterboard covered using adhesives, welding, etc., with a layer of insulation such as expanded polystyrene, agglomerated fibres, etc.
