[Class 75(iii)] A pyrophoric lighter has mounted on its fuel reservoir 1 an actuating member which engages a pivoted snuffer arm 22 carrying one or more pawls 17 urged against ratchet teeth provided on at least one side of the friction wheel 8, so that, during actuation, the part of the snuffer arm carrying the pawls moves towards the friction wheel to give a push drive thereto, the friction wheel being mounted on an axis 14 parallel to the pivotal axis 13 of said arm 22. The axis 13 is further from the top plate 2 of the reservoir 1 than the axis 14. An extension 15 of the thumb piece 12 of the actuating member 10 overlaps an extension 16 projecting from the back of the snuffer arm 22 behind the pivot 13. Two pawls 17, pivotally mounted on the extension 16, are pressed into engagement with ratchet wheels 18 on each side of the friction wheel 8 by a spring 19. On depressing the thumb piece 12 its extension 15 presses down the extension 16 so that the pawls 17 rotate the friction wheel 8 and the snuffer arm 22 is raised; the thumb piece and snuffer arm are returned to their initial positions by a spring acting on the base of the member 10, while the pawls slip backwardly over the ratchet teeth. To prevent unintentional removal of the plunger 10 a lip 21 on the extension 16 lies over the end of the extension 15. The pawls 17 may be rigidly secured to the arm 22 and be formed of spring metal, the spring 19 being dispensed with.
