[Class 75(iii)] The flint guide of a lighter is provided, behind the usual position of the flint, with an opening for the introduction of a flint, said opening being normally a t least partially closed by a spring - urged lever which urges the flint against the friction wheel, and means being provided for holding said lever away from the opening. A horizontal flint guide 10 is cut in a vertical metal plate 11 welded to the top plate of the lighter and is provided with a rectangular opening 20 which is sufficiently far from the friction wheel to prevent the flint from dropping out accidentally. A spring 12 lies parallel to the axis of rotation of the friction wheel 4 in a tube 13 closed by a screw 14, the pressure of this spring being transmitted to the flint 9 through a piston 12a which is set above the spring and presses on a projecting part 18 of a flat lever 15, said lever, which bears against the flint through a cam surface 19 and normally closes the opening 20 in the flint guide, being pivoted on a horizontal axis 16 and moving in a slit in the plate 11. To change a flint, pressure is exerted on the upper end 15a of the lever 15 so that a different part of the projection 18 bears against the piston 12a and holds the lever in its new position in which the opening 20 is uncovered. The lever 15 may be returned to its initial position by closing the lid 3 whereupon a cam 21 thereon pushes forward the end 15a of the lever, or by inserting a finger in the angle formed between the bevelled edges 25, 26 of the case and the lid 3 and pushing back the end 15a. The upper edge of the plate 11 forms an arc of a circle, the centre of which is the pivot 16, so that the operator's finger may be guided along said edge when pushing forward the end 15a. The lid 3 is held in its extreme positions by a blade spring 22 which is fixed in the case and one end of which acts on a finger 23 rigid with the lid. The knurled knob 8 by which the friction wheel 4 is operated has a sawtoothed outline, the steep sides of the teeth being engaged by the operator's finger.
