Abstract

584,413. Suction cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. (Hoover Co.). Nov. 2, 1944, No. 21447. [Class 8 (i)] In a semi-automatic nozzle height adjusting means of the type in which whatever the initial nozzle height adjustment is effected by given movements, the height at which the nozzle is adjusted is determined by a feeler which is lowered during the. adjusting operation so as to rest lightly on the carpet to gauge the level of its surface and is then withdrawn when the adjustment is complete. The feeler E, Fig. 1, carried by a fixed pivot E<4> comprises an operating surface E<1> which abuts a wheel carrying cranked axle C', a surface E<2> and a toothed sector E'. Also pivoted at E<4> is, an upwardly biassed operating lever F having a pedal F' and carrying a pawl G pivoted at F' and urged by a spring G<1> into engagement with the ratchet E<3>. A cam surface G<2> on the pawl G slides in contact with a fixed pin H. On pressing the pedal F<1> and drawing the pawl downwards to release the feeler E the surface E<2> thereof makes contact with the carpet and allows the nozzle to assume its adjusted position. On releasing the pedal the cam surface G<2> allows the pawl to re-engage the ratchet in the appropriate tooth and withdraws the feeler clear of the carpet. A pin O and slot P define the limits of nozzle height adjustment In a modification an upwardly urged cranked axle C<1>, Fig. 8 is engaged by one of a series of depressions M<3> of a cam plate pivoted at M<2>. Also pivoted at M<2> is a feeler plate N urged downwards by a spring N<4> where an operating member disengages the axle C<1> from the cam M. In its released position the member bears against a lip N' on the feeler and holds the latter in its inoperative position. In a further modification, Fig. 4, the adjusting mechanism is applied to the rear wheels B which are carried by a bracket J pivoted at J<1> and urged downwards by a spring J<2>. A feeler pivoted at K<2> and carrying a surface K<3> and a ratchet K<4> is released from a pawl L by a plate J<4> on pressing the cleaner downwards against the opening J<2>. As the casing is released the pawl engages an appropriate tooth K<4> to withdraw the feeler from the floor. Specifications 494,265 and 506,513 are referred to.
