Abstract
494,265. Vacuum cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. April 23, 1937, Nos. 11749 and 11750. Convention dates, Aug. 15, 1936 and Sept. 28, 1936. [Class 8 (i)] The nozzle A of a vacuum cleaner is adapted to be adjusted automatically in height according to the surface being cleaned. For this purpose the nozzle is pivoted to the chassis at a point A<1> and is lowered on to the ground surface and is then raised a predetermined amount. The chassis runs on wheels D, E, and a pedal lever H, pivoted on the axis E<1> of one of the wheels E, carries a pawl K, which is adapted to engage a ratchet sector F also turning on the axis E<1>. To effect adjustment the pedal is depressed against the action of a spring H<2>, the pawl K being disengaged from the sector F bya pin K<1> on the chassis engaging a cam slot in the pawl. The nozzle is then free to fall on the ground surface and, on release of the pedal, the pawl K engages and turns the sector F, which raises the nozzle by means of a cam slot F<1> in the sector engaged by a pin G<1> carried by a bracket G on the nozzle. The lever H may alternatively be operated by means of a cam surface M<2> on the handle bail M engaging a pin H<4> on the lever H.
