Abstract

608,238. Pivoted handles. HOOVER, Ltd. (Hoover Co.). Oct. 17, 1945, No. 27177. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, April 19, 1946.] [Class 61 (i)] [Also in Group XXVIII] A suction cleaner handle pivoted to the cleaner casing is locked and prevented from movement in one direction and is unlocked by means operated by movement of the handle in the opposite direction. The handle is movably supported at its lower end in a split socket 19, Fig. 3, pivoted for forward and rearward movement on a pin 20 carried by side walls 21, 22, Fig. 2, of a U-shaped bracket 23 riveted to a flange 12 of the cleaner casing. When in the upright or storage position, the handle is locked against rearward movement by the resilient engagement of a roller 40 carried by a detent 34 pivoted to the socket at 36 with a stop 31 in a rigid sector 30 riveted to the flange 12. On forward movement of the handle about the pivot 20, the roller 40 is shifted downwardly, and a notch 56 at the end of the detent 34 engages the bevelled end of a trigger 53, which on rearward movement of the handle lifts the roller 40 clear of the stop 31. The trigger on being disengaged from the detent is returned by a spring 57 to a stop 58. Rearward movement of the handle is limited by a stop 32, and a forward movement by the engagement of a recess 63 with a stop 64. A spring 59 about the pivot pin 20 serves to resist forward movement of the handle from the storage position, and a spring 46 counteracts the weight of the handle and gives it an upward bias.
