Abstract
598,972. Suction cleaners. STEVENS, A. H. (Eureka Vacuum Cleaner Co.). May 28, 1945, No. 13318. [Class 8 (i)] [Also in. Group XXIII] A propelling handle of a wheel-supported suction cleaner is mounted to allow of downward and rearward arcuate movement between its propelling and vertical parked positions, and in the parked position it is automatically locked by a spring-urged element movable relative to the handle engaging a locking element carried by the handle; the handle being released by downward pressure when in its parked position and serving when in the latter position to enable the cleaner to be lifted without relative movement of the handle. The locking elements of a suction cleaner handle 18 comprise a hook-shaped keeper 48 formed at the upper end of a link 50 pivoted about an axle 22 mounted on a leaf spring 24, and a pin 46 secured to one of two side walls forming a handle socket 28 pivoted to a bracket 34 secured to the cleaner casing 26. A stop pin 44 limits the arcuate movement of the handle which is biassed by a spring 38, and a stop 58 on the link 50 engages the undersurface of a plate 60 to limit the downward movement of the casing 26. A latch 64 of another link 62 also pivoted about the axle 22 engages the upper surface of the plate 60 to prevent vertical movement of the rear end of the cleaner when the handle is in the propelling position.
