Abstract

1,183,097. Ratchet mechanism. ARTHUR SHAW & CO. Ltd. 21 Oct., 1968 [20 July, 1967], No. 33358/67. Heading F2Q. [Also in Division F1] In a caulking gun having a cradle 1, Fig. 2, for supporting a cartridge, and a piston carried by a rod 7 formed with ratchet teeth 8 engaged by a driving pawl 13 mounted on a trigger 10 and a holding pawl 16 mounted on a handle 4 secured to the cradle, means are provided on the handle, for operation by the thumb of the hand gripping the handle, to disengage the ratchet from the pawls, to release the pressure on the piston and permit its withdrawal from the cartridge by knob 9. In Fig. 2, the disengaging means comprise a bush 5 rotatably mounted on handle 4 and slidably, but non- rotatably, receiving piston rod 7. Laterally projecting levers 19, Figs. 1 and 3 (not shown), on bush 5 are engageable by a thumb to rotate the bush and the rod to disengage teeth 8 from the pawls. In Fig. 4, a shoe 20 engages the tops of the pawls and is movable downwardly by levers 24, 22, Fig. 5 (not shown), to disengage the pawls from the ratchet teeth. In Figs. 6 to 8 (not shown), a part-cylindrical shoe (20a) embraces rod 7 and has lower edges engaging the tops of the pawls. A rod extends laterally from either side of the shoe through vertical slots in handle 4, depression of either rod acting to rotate the shoe about the rod to depress the pawls. In Fig. 9 (not shown), a spring-loaded shoe (27) engages the tops of the pawls and has an upper inclined face located beneath an inclined web extending across the handle. A lateral rod extends from either side of the shoe through an inclined slot in either side of the handle, and is moved along its slot to move the shoe against its spring to depress the pawls. In Fig. 10 (not shown), a spring- loaded shoe (32) engages the tops of the pawls and has a pair of rods extending from either side through inclined pairs of slots in the handle, one rod on either side being engaged by a thumb-operable lever (37).
