Abstract

974,556. Exercising apparatus. C. D. FOUNTAIN. July 24, 1963 [Nov. 14, 1962], 29254/63. Heading A6H. [Also in Division E2] A device suitable for use with an upwardly extending cable 11 for preventing the fall of the user comprises a housing 18 having openings 21, 45 for receiving the cable, locking means 24, 34 for locking the device to the cable, biasing means 35 for urging the locking means into an unlocked position, movable actuating means 37 for moving the locking means into an unlocked position, said actuating means being operatively connected to the user, e.g. by link 42 to belt 17. The cavity 19 of the housing 18 supports a receptacle 24 having an inwardly tapering camming surface 26 engageable by balls 34 extending through transverse bores 33 in a body member 30 to lock adjacent the cable 11, as shown in Fig. 5. A spring 35 biases the body 30 to the unlocked position. The actuation means comprises a lever 37 extending at one end through an aperture in the side of the housing 18 and connected at the other end to the belt 17. A chain 67 extends to a further similar locking means housed in member 52 but in which the locking means is biased towards the locked position. A spring clip 66 attached to the chain 67 serves to retain this locking means (see Fig. 4) in the open position. In use, upon the fall of the user the clip 66 is pulled from the upper locking means causing this to lock on to the cable, and the lever 37 pivots on the lower locking means against the biasing action causing this means to also lock on to the cable.
