to the respective levers 18 adjacent the pivot 17 thereof, and the other ends of said links are pivotally engaged upon the bolts 21 tonnecting the spaced ears 16 of the other cone 15. In each of the cone members between the spaced cars 16 thereon, a set screw 22 is threaded, and the inner ends of these set screws are engaged in the grooves or channels 10 of the opposed jaws 5.
To the outer ends of the levers 18, clevis rods or links 23 are pivotally connected, the other ends of said links being connected together by a clevis bolt 24 upon which the ends of the clevis 25 are engaged. To this clevis 25, the drum cable, indicated at C, is
adapted to be connected. C designates the cable which is connected to the load.
In the practical operation of the device, cable 0 is slipped through the grip longitudinally between the jaws 5, said jaws being in their released positions as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. When the winding drum is operated, the cable C will be wound thereon, and the levers H will be pulled to the positions indicated in full lines in Fig. 1 so that the cones 15 will be shifted inwardly upon the relatively thick central portions of the jaws 5 in opposite directions and said jaws thus forced inwardly to cause the corrugated inner faces 7 thereof to securely grip upon the cable. It will be readily seen that the greater the load and, therefore, the power which is required to pull the same, the greater will be the gripping pressure of the jaws upon the cable through the medium of the levers 18 and links 19. The gripping device may be attached to the cable C at any point along its length in spaced relation to the load, so that the drum can be started empty, and injury to the cable or drum thus obviated as sometimes occurs through overwinding. The load may be attached to or released from the device very quickly. Owing to the provision of the set screws 22 in the cones 15 which bear against the base walls of the channels or grooves 10, said cone members will occupy corresponding positions upon the opposite ends of the jaws 5, their outward longitudinal movement upon the jaws being limited by the set screws. The screws also serve to maintain the jaws 5 in their proper relative positions and prevent turning or rotative movement of the same within the cones 15.
As previously noted, the jaws, when released, are held out of frictional engagement with the cable by the springs 14 while the ring or collar 13 prevents relative longitudinal movement of the j aws, Thus, it will be seen that each of the jaws has precisely the same gripping effect upon the cable, said jaws operating in the manner of an expanding and contracting cylinder on all parts of the circumference of the cable, the pressure being equally distributed throughout the length of the aws. As the mechanical construction of my improved cable grip is quite simple, it will be seen that the device is extremely durable and capable of withstanding the severe use to which such devices are ordinarily subjected. It will be manifest that the size of the jaws and the internal diameterof the cones may be considerably varied so as to enable the grip to be applied to cables of different sizes.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of operation and several advantages of the invention will be clearly and fully understood. In the drawing, I have disclosed what I believe to be the preferred form and relative proportions of the several parts; but it will-be understood that I do not desire to be at all restricted in this respect as various changes may be necessitated as the particular exigencies of the case, encountered in the use to which the device is to be applied, may indicate to be desirable. I desire it also to be understood that, while I have above referred to a certain relative arrangement of the several cooperating elements, the invention might also. be produced in other modified forms and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. A cable grip including a plurality of gripping jaws each having its outer face inclined, opposed relat vely slidable elements engaged upon the inclined faces of the jaws, operating connections between said elements, and means connected to said operating connections to actuate the same and simultaneously shift said elements upon the relatively stationary jaws to force the jaws into gripping engagement upon a cable arranged between the same.
