Abstract

642,058. Refrigerating. DAXELHOFER, J. P. June 23, 1948, No. 16932. Convention date; June 23, 1947. [Class 29] [Also in Group XXI] A method freezing ground by direct evaporation of a liquified gas in tubes sunk in the ground consists in feeding the liquified gas into the tubes discontinuously and in measured quantities, the pressure of the gas having been reduced prior to its entry into the tubes. The apparatus comprises a compressor 1 feeding the liquified gas, which may be CO 2 , successively through an oil trap 2, a condenser 3, a high pressure storage chamber 4 and thence past a throttling valve 5 into a low pressure chamber 6 connected by a pipe 20 to the suction main 14 of the compressor 1. The refrigerant is fed into a measuring chamber 9 which may be isolated from the chamber 6 on receiving a required quantity of refrigerant. This quantity is passed through valves 10, 12 into, and completely fills, a freezing tube or tubes 11, which are then isolated from the chamber 9 and connected to the suction main 14. When the contents of the tubes have evaporated they are recharged from the chamber 19. Connected to the pipe 20 is a chamber 15 which can be isolated from the pipe by a valve 16, the chamber being provided with a plug 18 through which can be inserted solid refrigerant to replenish losses in the system.
