Abstract
8722. Schmidt, K. April 15. Shafts.-Freezing-apparatus for use in sinking shafts through boggy or very moist soil, consists of pairs of adjacent vertical pipes a, b, Fig. 2, or concentric vertical pipes a, b, Fig. 1, arranged in a circle and connected together into two or four groups. In one method, a condenser D, Fig. 4, containing a liquid freezing-medium, such as carbonic acid, communicates through pipes i, R, valves o, p, q, r, and pipes k, l, m, n, with the vertical freezing- pipes, and the vapour or gas is conveyed back to the compressors through pipes a, a', a<2>. The compression pumps A, B are arranged as shown in Fig. 4, so that they may act as single pumps during the first part of the compression and as compound pumps during the remainder. When using one compressor only, the valves p, q are closed and the valves t, t<1> opened, so that the vertical pipes are connected in two groups. The freezing-pipes may be arranged in overlapping groups as shown in Fig. 3. The first pair of freezing-pipes of each group into which the freezing-medium is conducted may consist of two concentric tubes a, b, Fig. 5, separated by a concentric casing c. This arrangement may also be used in the brine freezing-process.
