Abstract

1291389 Rotary shaft seals IDEMETSU PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd 6 March 1970 [11 March 1969] 10892/70 Heading F2B In a centrifugal compressor used for compressing a petroleum pyrolysis gas containing ethylene and having a shaft seal supplied with sealing oil, contamination of the sealing oil by the pyrolysis gas is prevented by introducing into the shaft seal between the sealing oil and the pyrolysis gas a mixture of methane and hydrogen gas. In the embodiment shown, the compressor shaft is sealed by a suction side seal including labyrinths 1, 3 and 9 and rings 5 and 7 and a discharge side seal including labyrinths 2, 4 and 10 and rings 6 and 8. The spaces between labyrinths 1 and 3 and 2 and 4 are interconnected by a balance pipe 11 and sealing oil is supplied through pipe 13 to the spaces between rings 5 and 7 and 6 and 8. Contact between sealing oil leaking past rings 5 and 6 and pyrolysis gas from the compression chamber is prevented by introducing through pipes 12 and 15 a mixture of methane and hydrogen at a pressure slightly less than that of the sealing oil to the spaces between rings 3 and 5 and 4 and 6. The spaces between ring 7 and labyrinth 9 and ring 8 and labyrinth 10 are connected to drain via a pipe 14.
