Abstract

[Also in Division F1] In a shaft sealing arrangement for a rotodynamic compressor comprising a housing 1 having two compressor chambers with rotors 3, 4 therein for simultaneously and separately compressing two gas streams, e.g. in an ammonia synthesizing process, the compressor chambers are separated by an intermediate chamber 9 connected to the compressor chambers through labyrinth shaft seals 6, 7, and the pressure in the intermediate chamber is maintained lower than that in each of the compressor chambers. Thus leakage from either compressor chamber through its seal 6 or 7 does not flow to the other compressor chamber but instead is drawn off through pipe 14, liquid/gas separator 15, pipe 16 and pressure regulator 17. The formation of solid deposits in the intermediate chamber may be prevented by injecting through a pipe 18 a suitable solvent liquid, e.g. water or an aqueous ammonia solution.
